No shortage of fertilisers in state: Manipur CM to farmers

Imphal: CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday told farmers that there is no shortage of fertilisers in Manipur, stating that around 2 lakh bags of urea are currently available in stock for the ongoing Kharif cultivation season. The assurance came as the CM flagged off fertiliser distribution trucks during the Fertiliser Distribution Camp for Kharif 2026, organised by the directorate of agriculture at Sanjenthong in Imphal.Khemchand said the govt has taken measures to ensure timely and equitable distribution of fertilisers across the state. He noted that although around 1.8 lakh bags of urea were distributed up to Sept last year, reports of shortages had emerged from some areas. To prevent a recurrence of such issues, the govt has introduced a more streamlined distribution mechanism based on Aadhaar cards, farmer cards and area-specific requirements. As part of the programme, the CM also launched the organic fertiliser ‘Oorja’, which will be made available to farmers at a subsidised price of Rs 250 per bag against its market price of Rs 480.Highlighting the govt’s efforts to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and gradually expand organic farming in the state, Khemchand said around 4000 hectares have already been brought under organic cultivation and the govt is working towards bringing another 4000 hectares under organic farming in the coming years.
