Gujarat minister apologizes after his remarks on teachers spark controversy

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s minister of state for agriculture, Ramesh Katara, has issued a public apology after facing widespread backlash over his controversial remarks against teachers during a govt event in Godhra. The comments sparked strong reactions from teachers’ associations and the education fraternity across the state.During the event in Panchmahal district, Katara made remarks on teachers’ salary structures and work practices. He stated that despite receiving high pay and benefits under the pay commission norms, teachers often remain dissatisfied and continue to protest against the govt. He also alleged that some teachers spend time on mobile phones instead of focusing on classroom teaching.A video of his speech went viral on social media, triggering outrage among educators. Several teachers’ organisations, including the Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, condemned the remarks as inappropriate and disrespectful. They demanded that the minister issue a public apology and also approached the chief minister regarding the matter.As criticism intensified, the govt moved swiftly to contain the situation. Katara released a video message, expressing his regret with folded hands. He stated he sincerely apologises to the teaching community if his words hurt anyone, and withdrew his statements.
