19-yr-old loses arm as argument escalates into violence

Mohali: A youth, all of 19, lost his right arm in a clash with rivals at Highland Park grounds in Zirakpur. Not only did Bhupinder Singh of Aastha Apartments, Patiala Road, lose his right arm near the elbow, he also suffered multiple deep gashes on his body. Doctors said his condition is critical.According to the police, the incident took place on April 18 following an ongoing dispute between the groups. In his statement, Bhupinder Singh said he received a phone call from his brother, Ranvir Singh, who informed him that he had been assaulted by Gurpreet Singh. Bhupinder rushed to the spot, where Gurpreet allegedly arrived with six to seven accomplices.An argument between the two sides soon escalated into a violent confrontation. During the clash, Gurpreet Singh allegedly attacked Bhupinder with a kirpan. As Bhupinder tried to defend himself, he was repeatedly struck, resulting in his arm being severed and serious injuries to his chest and waist. He collapsed at the scene due to excessive bleeding. Ranvir Singh was also injured in the attack. He sustained head injuries and a wound above the eye after being struck with a sharp-edged weapon. After the assault, the accused reportedly fled the spot while issuing threats to the victims. Bhupinder was initially taken to the civil hospital in Dhakoli by his brother in a private vehicle. After being provided first aid, he was referred to GMCH-32, where he is undergoing treatment.By the time police reached information and reached the spot, the accused had escaped. Police have registered a case against Gurpreet Singh and six to seven unidentified persons on the victim’s statement. Raids are being conducted to arrest the accused, and CCTV footage from the area is being examined.The incident has triggered concern among local residents, with calls for stricter law enforcement in the area.
