Man held for robbing deaf-mute person in Delhi's Jahangirpuri

NEW DELHI: A man has been apprehended in connection with the robbery of a mobile phone from a specially-abled person in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, police said on Sunday, a day after a video of the incident went viral on social media.According to police, the victim is a deaf and mute man whose mobile phone was allegedly snatched during the incident. Police traced an eyewitness who had intervened to help the victim during the robbery. The witness sustained a minor knife injury while trying to stop the accused and later provided a detailed statement to investigators.The accused, identified as Firoj Alam, was nabbed by a team from Jahangir Puri police station after officers analysed CCTV footage and gathered local intelligence. Police said the accused was further identified by the victim and his father during the course of the investigation. The eyewitness also identified Alam as the person involved in the crime.A background check revealed that the accused has previously been involved in cases of robbery and offences under the Arms Act, police said.A case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said efforts are being made to recover the robbed mobile phone.
