UK mother pays tribute at AI171 site amid confusion over remains
UK’s Amanda Donaghey and her relative visited the AI171 plane crash site onFriday to pay homage to her son Fiognal Greenlaw Meek & his partner Jamie

Ahmedabad: Amanda Donaghey, who travelled from the UK to Ahmedabad to pay tribute to her son Fiognal Greenlaw Meek and his partner Jamie, both among 241 passengers killed in the AI171 crash, said “British authorities have been able to identify” remains allegedly sent mistakenly to her as her son’s and that officials are now “awaiting information from Indian govt to repatriate him” to the family to which the match belongs.Donaghey visited the crash site at the Atulyam block of the BJ Medical College hostel on Friday along with other grieving relatives. Accompanied by a family member, she walked up to the charred building and broke down. She carried a book she compiled about her son and showed it to others present. She also left a tribute at the site — a couple’s photograph of Fiognal and Jamie and a dog soft toy — placing them on the bricks and ash.Speaking to media at the site, Donaghey said: “….the British authorities have been able to identify him or found identifiable characteristics of him. All they are waiting for is the Indian govt to allow them the information, to repatriate him. I hope you can reach out to the govt and make sure that the family of this match actually get their loved one back,” she said.Donaghey earlier drew attention in the UK over her efforts to obtain the `correct remains of her son’. In interviews to UK media, she said the remains labelled as Fiongal and sent to her by Indian authorities were reportedly of “an old person”. Her lawyer was quoted as saying that while a tragedy of such scale created identification challenges, “there still needs to be transparency and accountability, because the families deserve it”.Donaghey later left the crash site. In earlier media statements in the UK, Amanda said she hoped to get answers, stating, ‘I feel very personally uncomfortable with the fact that I went there to get him and I failed.’
