Varanasi: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has prepared a comprehensive development plan worth Rs48.88 crore aimed at modernising the city’s infrastructure while preserving its ancient cultural and historical character.Under the proposed plan, key religious and tourist destinations will be upgraded, and public infrastructure across the city will be developed in the traditional architectural style of Banaras to further strengthen Varanasi’s global identity.A major component of the project is the construction of a modern automated sliding and puzzle parking facility in Sarnath, one of the city’s most visited tourist destinations. The facility is expected to improve traffic management and ease congestion in the area.The civic body also plans to reorganise the vegetable market near Manikarnika Ghat and develop a dedicated two-wheeler parking area to better manage crowds and traffic movement.To improve facilities at Pishachmochan Kund, which witnesses large gatherings during Pitru Paksha and other religious occasions, the VMC will spend Rs2.34 crore on the construction of toilets, drinking water facilities and accommodation-related infrastructure for devotees.According to Himanshu Nagpal, beautification work has already begun at major intersections across the city. The initiative started with Mint House and the Nadesar trijunction, where heritage-style traffic booths and large antique-style clocks reflecting Banaras’ traditional architecture have been installed.In the first phase, crossings at Kachhari, Police Line, Sundarpur and Bhikharipur have been upgraded at a cost of Rs3.10 crore.The VMC is also planning to transform the VIP route connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur with the city into a spiritual gateway. Grand Mahakal pillars will be installed along the route at a cost of Rs2.35 crore to create a distinctive welcome experience for visitors arriving in Varanasi.In another major project, the stretch from Maidagin Crossing to Girjaghar Crossing via Godaulia will be illuminated with heritage-themed lighting at a cost of Rs3.98 crore. The project aims to enhance the city’s night-time aesthetics and further highlight the architectural grandeur of Kashi.Officials said the projects are designed to balance modern urban infrastructure with the city’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage, improving facilities for both residents and the millions of pilgrims and tourists who visit Varanasi every year.
