Aizawl: Mizoram has been reeling under extreme heat as mercury rose to unprecedented 35.8°C in Siaha district situated in the southern part of the state on Friday, according to the Aizawl Meteorological Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks a record high for the region in June, the centre stated on Sunday.Residents of Aizawl also faced intense heat between June 2 and 6 as the temperature soared to a maximum of over 30°C on Wednesday and Friday. The lowest maximum temperature during this period hovered between 26°C and 29°C, while minimum temperatures touched 20-21°C, making it difficult for residents to sleep at night without air conditioning.Pu Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, the director of the Aizawl Meteorological Centre, said the southwest monsoon has further advanced into Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, as well as parts of Tripura, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.Dwivedi said the southwest monsoon arrived on June 4, four days later than the nomal onset date and later than the prediction that it will arrive on May 26.Meanwhile, with the monsoon’s arrival in the northeast, the IMD predicts that fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during June 7-13.Isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching from 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph) is also likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on June 7 and during June 10-11.The IMD further predicts the possibility of isolated very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura between June 9 and 13.
