Dimapur: Highlighting environmental challenges in Nagaland, environment, forests & climate change minister CL John identified forest fires, particularly jungle burning for cultivation purposes, as a cause of environmental degradation.Addressing a programme to mark the World Environment Day at the Kohima Peace Memorial & Eco Park on Friday, John expressed concern over the continued prevalence of hunting, noting that forests require birds and wildlife to maintain ecological balance.Calling for a conservation movement, he said just as the practice of headhunting in the state had been abandoned, society should also work towards ending the hunting of animals and birds.He said students and youth must play a leading role in creating awareness and driving positive change.The minister further pointed out that rising temperatures in Kohima, Dimapur, and other parts of the state were visible effects of global warming.He reminded citizens that the government has already banned single-use plastics as part of efforts to reduce environmental pollution.Expressing concern over poor waste disposal habits, he observed that while Nagas are known for their good dressing sense, civic sense often remains lacking, citing the widespread littering of plastic bottles, tobacco sachets, and other waste in public places.He urged citizens to adopt responsible habits and work collectively toward maintaining a cleaner and greener Nagaland.The Nagaland municipal affairs department conducted “Waste-to-Resource” drive at the Secretariat Plaza in Kohima on the day to promote sustainable waste management practices and strengthen public awareness on environmental conservation through resource recovery and recycling.
