Ludhiana: When the final ballots were tallied in Punjab’s civic elections, Doraha’s municipal council found itself facing a historic first: an entire household elected to its chambers.Representing the Aam Aadmi Party, a veteran local politician, his wife, and their 27-year-old son dismantled the opposition across three separate wards, helping anchor AAP’s 8-7 majority in the 15-member local body. The family’s political patriarch, Sudarshan Kumar Sharma, 57, won Ward 8 by 211 votes, defeating Mandeep Singh Mangat of the Congress. Sharma first entered public office in 1992 and has now won seven local elections. His wife, Priya Sharma, 52, secured her third council term by defeating Congress candidate Saroj Rani by 47 votes in Ward 5. Following their victories, the family visited a local temple to thank residents and the deity.“I have been serving this community for 35 years,” Sudarshan Sharma said, adding that his wife remains dedicated to her constituents. “Development will be our absolute priority.”The couple’s 27-year-old son, Anmol Sharma, completed the sweep in Ward 6, defeating Congress rival Pardeep Bansal by 113 votes to secure his first term in office .Returning Officer Nirpal Singh confirmed the family’s victories, noting they are expected to collect their official election certificates within the next two days. The Sharmas, who have been aligned with AAP for five years, plan to lobby Payal constituency lawmakers to fund a new sports ground, a college, and updated municipal infrastructure. Education runs high in the household; Sudarshan holds a master’s degree, while his wife and son both hold bachelor’s degrees. The family will now enter the Doraha municipal council together, wielding immense collective leverage over local infrastructure and development strategy. AAP’s success in Doraha mirrors a broader Punjab-wide surge, with the party capturing 57 out of 112 seats across six municipal elections.
