Illegal to arrest man who made Baga video: MLA

Panaji: Congress MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira hit out at the Goa police for what he said was ‘illegal action’ in booking the individual who uploaded the video of customers being solicited for prostitution at Baga. Ferreira said the Uttar Pradesh resident was booked only to save govt from the embarrassment of how low Goa’s tourism has fallen.“The action of the police is totally flawed. Perhaps the police registered the offence at the direction of some higher-ups, or political masters. So-called customers cannot be booked or arrested at all. Secondly, what we saw was a woman who was soliciting in a public place,” said Ferreira. He said there is nothing obscene in the uploaded video, and recording a video and uploading it is not an offence either. “The registration of an FIR when no cognisable offence is made out shows the police have not applied their mind,” said Ferreira. He said that on a daily basis there are videos, news and messages being shared of tourists causing a ruckus, abusing people, driving or riding roughly and ending up in accidents. All illegal and immoral activities are being allowed to continue because antisocial elements are greasing the palms of officials, he alleged.
