Hyderabad: A day after Karnataka state cabinet approved ‘Rohith Vemula Bill’, Telangana govt on Friday constituted a cabinet sub-committee to examine and recommend measures for framing legislation on the proposed Rohit Vemula Telangana (Prevention of Identity Based Discrimination in Higher Education) Bill, 2026. According to GO No. 90 issued by the general administration (cabinet) department, the panel will study various forms of identity-based discrimination in higher education institutions and suggest suitable legal provisions to address the issue. The sub-committee will be chaired by deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka. Other members are ministers N Uttam Kumar Reddy, Damodar Raja Narasimha, D Sridhar Babu, and Ponnam Prabhakar. The special chief secretary to the Scheduled Caste development department has been appointed convenor of the committee.The govt asked the panel to submit its recommendations at the earliest, signalling its intent to move ahead with the legislation in a time-bound manner. Officials said the committee’s formation marks an important step towards institutional reforms in the education sector of the state, particularly in addressing concerns over social discrimination.Meanwhile, Karnataka has also moved in a similar direction. The Karnataka Rohith Vemula (Prevention of Discrimination, Exclusion or Injustice) (Right to Education and Dignity) Bill, 2026, was cleared by the Siddaramaiah cabinet in Bengaluru on Thursday. The bill is expected to be introduced during the monsoon session.
