Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University has proposed a revised “Other Activities Fees” structure at Rs 4,340 for LLB and BA-LLB courses across affiliated colleges. The university’s proposal comes in the wake of several former students, including Krishnakant Sathe and Mayur Garud, of city-based ILS Law College seeking refund of what they had described as “excess fees” charged under unapproved heads.Documents shared by Vidhivat Legal Consortium (VLC) with the media on Wednesday stated that the proposed changes reflected in the fee structure for the 2026-27 academic year.In an official communication to Sathe on April 25, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) said the proposed fee structure for LLB (3 years) and BA-LLB (5 years) courses at ILS Law College for 2026-27 was being provided along with the reply. The communication, issued by the university’s PG admission section, stated that the committee recommended capping of the “Other Activities Fees” component for LLB and BA-LLB courses at Rs 4,340 under the proposed fee fixation structure.A similar communication on the proposed fee structure was also issued by the university to ILS Law College. The communication was signed by M V Rasve, deputy registrar of the university’s PG admission section. When contacted, an SPPU official confirmed that the proposed fee structure formed part of the university’s fee fixation process for the law courses. The official said such proposals were sent to colleges every year.VLC representatives said the revised structure indicated a difference of around Rs 32,120 (or nearly 88%) in the “Other Activities Fees” component in comparison with Rs 36,460, as mentioned in the 2024-25 ILS student receipts under comparable components. The issue pertains to fees charged under the “Other Fees” category for LLB and BA-LLB courses and forms part of a matter pending before the Bombay HC involving former ILS students Garud and Sathe.Comparative charts shared by VLC members showed substantial differences across several fee heads. The “E-learning Equipment” component reflected in earlier receipts was Rs 5,500, while the committee-recommended structure is Rs 250. Print resources charges were shown at Rs 3,850 in earlier receipts and Rs 50 in the revised structure. Moot court fees were shown at Rs 3,850 in earlier receipts and Rs 1,000 in the revised structure.Phone calls and text messages to ILS Law College principal-in-charge Deepa Paturkar were unanswered at the time of going to press. When contacted, ILS Law College vice-principal Tejaswini Malegaonkar declined to comment on the issue.
