Student detained for illegal racing, injuring constable

Hyderabad: Raidurgam police of the Cyberabad commissionerate detained a 19-year-old student for allegedly participating in illegal racing and injuring a constable.Residents and commuters alerted the police on Saturday night, reporting that a group of youngsters were creating chaos in the IT corridor by speeding through roads in cars and on bikes fitted with modified silencers that produced excessive noise. The racers were allegedly seen speeding around T-Hub, IKEA, and My Home Bhooja.Acting on the information, Raidurgam police rushed to the stretch and began checking vehicles. During the operation, police attempted to stop a car, but the driver allegedly ignored the signal and sped towards police personnel.Constable Ramesh, who tried to block the vehicle, sustained minor injuries to his right thumb in the incident. Police said that other racers fled the area after noticing the police presence.Police later detained the driver, identified as Mohammed Rehan, 19, a second-year BBA student from Mehdipatnam. Officers seized the car and a mobile phone from his possession.According to the police, Rehan and three others were booked on charges including rash and negligent driving, illegal vehicle modification, driving without a licence, and obstructing government officials from discharging their duties.The Raidurgam inspector said efforts are underway to identify and trace the remaining racers who escaped from the scene. Police are also investigating whether the group was involved in organised late-night racing activities in the Financial District and Knowledge City areas.
