Simriti’ devoted to late historian Malwinderjit Singh Warraich, who documented revolutions

BATHINDA: Recalling the life sketch of late Prof Malwinderjit Singh Warraich with writings about him by academicians, authors and from those into various walks of life who came into contact of the late historian, writer Gurbhajan Singh Gill edited a tribute booklet ‘Simirti’, which was released at the prayer service for Warraich on Saturday. Right from freedom fighter Bhagat Singh’ nephew Prof Jagmohan Singh to Warraich’ daughter Dr Minna Jakhar, Sahitya Akademi Award winner writers Waryam Singh Sandhu and Swarajbir and many more including Vice Chancellors, College Principals have recalled their respective associations with Malwinder Jit Singh Warraich, who was more known as ‘Gadri Babian Da Munshi’, due to his long spell in chronicling various activities of Ghadar Party and documenting the various revolutions and the revolutionaries.96 years Prof Warraich had passed away at Saketri near Chandigarh on May 9. The invaluable contribution by Prof Malwinderjit Singh in translating various documents related to the Ghadar Party and other contemporary revolutionaries and making rare literature about Ghadarites accessible which he completed with unwavering dedication, was duly remembered when a large number of people assembled at Chandigarh on Saturday to bade him final goodbye. A number of students of Prof Malwinderjit, who are now settled in various corners of the world, recalled how he was a guiding force in shaping up lives and making them to take interest in diving deep in freedom struggles. Born on November 21, 1929 at Ladhewala warraich village in Gujranwala (Pakistan) in 1929, Warraich taught humanities at Guru Nanak Engineering College Ludhiana for nearly 3 decades from 1960 to November 1989. After his retirement, Warraich completed LLB from Kurukshetra University and started practice at Punjab and Haryana High Court and concentrated into public interest litigations and succeeded in getting the Kuka Movement, Ghadr Party, Komagata Maru and Jallianwala Bagh martyrs’ the official recognition as episodes of freedom struggle besides getting freedom fighters’ lands, confiscated by the government, returned to their kin, recalled Gurbhajan Gill.“Warraich Sahib will be remembered for long for his writings about hidden facts about Ghadar Party and Gadri Babas apart from a thoughtful research into life of Bhagat Singh including and Lahore Conspiracy case and Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Namdhari movement and Komagata Maru”, said Prof Jagmohan Singh, who remained a student of Warraich and later taught with him for a long time.
