Cow slaughter accused arrested after encounter

Varanasi: An accused of cow slaughtering, Arif alias Fusi, 32, was arrested after suffering a bullet injury during an exchange of fire with Kaptanganj cops in Azamgarh district on Saturday early morning.Azamgarh’s ASP (Rural) Chirag Jain on Saturday said Kaptanganj police were busy in night patrolling when informers alerted them around 2.20 am about the movement of two criminals involved in cow slaughtering incidents between Dharauli and Kushmahra on a motorcycle.He said the police acted promptly, cordoned off the area and tried to intercept the duo.However, on seeing themselves surrounded by police, the criminals opened fire on them, said Jain, adding in retaliatory action one criminal suffered a bullet injury to his right leg, while his accomplice managed to escape.Police arrested the injured criminal, identified as Arif alias Fusi of Sahpur Sarain. After recovering a country-made pistol, cartridges and a motorcycle, police rushed him to hospital.Jain said that on May 12 a case under section of the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act was lodged at Kaptanganj police station after the remains of a butchered animal were found behind CHC Chhituwa Kushmahra. During the investigation, the involvement of Arif and his gang members came to light. Many cases of cow slaughter and theft were lodged against Arif, who was also booked under the Gangster Act.
