60-hour block starts for Chingrighata metro work

Kolkata: The phase II work to bridge Orange Line’s viaduct gap at Chingrighata started more than an hour late on Friday because of heavy traffic flow. The second 60-hour traffic block — closing the eastern flank connecting piers 318 and 319 — was to start at 8 pm and continue till 8 am on Monday.A 60-hour traffic block was issued by Kolkata Police last weekend, allowing the implementing agency RVNL to launch a 28-m concrete deck between pillars 317 and 318. On Friday, the agency started filling the gap between piers 318 and 319 above the eastern flank of Chingrighata crossing. But work could not start on time as cops pleaded helplessness trying to control the traffic. When the 366 m gap is bridged at Chingrighata, the Orange Line’s Metropolitan-New Garia section will extend operations to Sector V.
