HC bins plea to ban ‘Karuppu’

Chennai: Madras high court has rejected a plea seeking a ban on the recently released movie Karuppu, starring actors Suriya and Trisha in the lead, for showing judges, courts and the entire judicial system in a poor light.A vacation bench comprising judges GR Swaminathan and V Lakshminarayan held that they were not convinced that the portrayal of the legal profession in the movie was beyond the limits of freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution and dismissed the plea. The petition filed by advocate RS Tamil Vendhan argued that the Karuppu movie, directed by RJ Balaji and produced by Dream Warriors, which hit the screens on May 15, ridicules the unique and independent judicial system in India and shows judges consuming alcohol and indulging in corruption. The petitioner contended that allowing the movie to be screened in movie theatres and streamed on OTT platforms would make citizens lose hope in the legal framework. However, the bench did not accept the arguments and rejected the petition.
