Silchar: Two youths were killed in a road accident on the Sonabarighat bypass in Cachar district on Wednesday evening after the scooter they were riding allegedly skidded and came under the rear wheels of a truck on NH-306 near Saidpur area, police and eyewitnesses said.The deceased have been identified as Soppan Roy (25) and Surendra Roy (24), residents of Bhubandhar area under Dholai police station limits. The accident occurred at around 5:30pm while the duo was returning home on a newly purchased scooter after visiting a relative in the Silchar Medical College and Hospital area.Eyewitnesses said the two youths were attempting to overtake a truck when they noticed an autorickshaw approaching from the opposite direction. As the rider applied brakes suddenly, the scooter reportedly lost balance and skidded, throwing both riders under the rear wheels of the truck.“One of them suffered severe head injuries while the other sustained critical chest injuries. Both died on the spot,” an eyewitness said. A neighbour of the victims said the two youths had been working in Tamil Nadu and had returned home only a few days ago. Police rushed to the spot and, with the help of locals, recovered the bodies and sent them to the SMCH.
