Hyderabad: Congress has filed a complaint with the State Election Commission (SEC), seeking the replacement of M2 model EVMs proposed for the upcoming ZPTC, MPTC and municipal corporation elections. The party argued that the machines do not support the VVPAT system, leaving voters unable to verify whether their votes were recorded for the candidate of their choice. In a formal complaint submitted to the Telangana SEC on May 19, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) objected to the use of M2 model EVMs for the local body polls.According to the complaint, the M2 model machines lack the VVPAT facility. The party stated that, without VVPAT, voters cannot confirm whether their votes have been correctly recorded. Citing this concern, the TPCC demanded the use of ballot papers instead of M2 model EVMs for the ZPTC, MPTC and municipal corporation elections.Questions raised over EVM checkingThe party also raised objections over the ongoing checking of EVMs at the Chudi Bazaar godown. It alleged that the process was not being conducted in accordance with the “Manual on Electronic Voting Machines” issued by the Election Commission of India. The complaint further stated that the checking was being carried out without the presence of the district electoral officer or other responsible officials, as mandated under the prescribed procedure. The TPCC urged the SEC to immediately halt the ongoing checking process and clarify what it described as conflicting information regarding the First Level Check procedures. The complaint was submitted by the TPCC election commission coordination Committee and signed by its chairman, P Rajesh Kumar.
