Pedestrian dies in hit-and-run accident in Baner

Pune: In a hit-and-run accident, a 38-year-old pedestrian died in the Mohannagar area of Baner on Saturday morning. The accident occurred while the victim was out for his regular walk. The Bavdhan police on Sunday registered an accidental death case against the unknown driver of a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV).The police have identified the deceased as Kunal Mohite of Sus. His brother-in-law has lodged a complaint with the Bavdhan police.Police Sub-Inspector Sarang Thakare of the Bavdhan police told TOI that the accident happened around 7:15 AM when Mohite was on his regular morning walk. An unknown vehicle hit him and sped away from the spot. He was rushed to the Aundh hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.”When we checked the CCTV footage, we found a white-colored compact SUV hit Mohite. The driver did not stop after the accident,” Thakare said, adding that Mohite worked with a logistics company. We are currently searching for the vehicle and the driver,” the officer said. The residents of Mohannagar have planned to meet the local corporator on Tuesday regarding the ongoing safety issues they face in the area.Nikhil Nanal, a resident of the area, told TOI that the road where the accident happened lacks a footpath. “It has been our long-pending demand. Had the road had a footpath, the victim would not have had to walk on the road,” Nanal said.He also said that encroachment on both sides of the road is another major issue. “We have streetlights, but most of the time, half of them are not working. There are speed breakers on the road, but they lack proper markings,” he said.
