Two fatal road accidents in Jaipur leave lecturer, hotelier dead

Jaipur: Two separate late-night road accidents in Jaipur Sunday claimed the lives of a woman lecturer and a hotel operator, raising concerns over overspeeding in the city.In the first incident, Bhawna Vashisht, 40, a lecturer, was killed in a hit-and-run case while she was out on a post-dinner walk with her husband in Jagatpura area.According to Ramnagariya police, the accident occurred around 10.30 pm near the CBI railway crossing when an unidentified rashly driven vehicle hit the couple from behind and fled the spot.“Passers-by alerted police, who rushed the couple to hospital. Bhawna succumbed during treatment, while her husband was discharged after medical care,” said a senior police officer.Police have registered a hit-and-run case and launched a search for the unidentified vehicle and driver. In another accident reported a few hours later, a speeding car overturned near Jaipur Bakery on the 200-feet Bypass Road, killing a 26-year-old hotelier and injuring the driver.Karni Vihar police said the deceased, Surendra Singh Shekhawat, a resident of Palsana, was running a hotel at Sirsi Road.“Around 11.45 pm, Shekhawat along with five friends was travelling in two vehicles towards the bypass when the speeding car lost balance while trying to avoid a divider and overturned,” said a senior police officer.Shekhawat, who was seated beside the driver, suffered critical injuries. His friends managed to escape by jumping out through the windows. “Shekhawat and driver Ashok Bishnoi were rushed to hospital, where Surendra was declared dead. Ashok remains admitted for treatment,” said an officer.Police said overspeeding appeared to be the primary cause in both accidents.
