Asra Garg is new IG for intelligence

Chennai: Asra Garg, inspector general of police, North Zone, has been posted as the inspector-general of police, Intelligence.He replaced Avinash Kumar, who was posted to the intelligence wing by the Election Commission of India (ECI) ahead of the assembly polls. The ECI had removed the then IG (Intelligence) K A Senthil Velan to make the appointment.A 2004-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Garg was part of the Special Investigation Team constituted by the Madras high court on Oct 3, 2025, to probe the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives at a rally addressed by chief minister Vijay. The probe was then transferred to the CBI. During his tenure as North Zone IG, Garg led the dismantling of an interstate synthetic drug cartel operating through digital apps, with Tiruvallur police arresting over a dozen suspects, including foreign nationals.
