Agartala: Two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers were killed when BSF jawans fired on them in self-defence along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Friday night. The confrontation occurred near the border wire fencing between Nabinpara and Bangaband under Kamalasagar border outpost, an area known for its rampant smuggling activities facilitated by villagers residing on both sides of the border.According to reports, BSF jawans, during a routine patrolling, observed a group of 10-15 individuals secretly transferring goods across the border fence to their Indian counterparts under the cover of darkness. In response to the smugglers’ aggression, which involved pelting stones at the BSF troops, the jawans were compelled to open fire. They were identified as Nabin Hussain (20) and Md Moorsalin (40), who were taken to Bishalgarh hospital, where doctors declared them to be brought dead.Following the shooting, police visited the site to assess the situation and launched an investigation into reports of involvement by Indian villagers in cross-border smuggling activities.Police said before their deaths, the suspected smugglers admitted to being from the other side of the border and confessed to their involvement in smuggling.Their bodies were later handed over to the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) after post-mortem examinations on Saturday, police said.
