2-day CPM state committee meet discusses party’s bypoll loss

Agartala: A two-day state committee meeting of Tripura CPM to discuss the party’s defeat in the Dharmanagar bypoll and elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) concluded on Thursday.State secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said the discussion concentrated on developing a revival strategy for the party. Chaudhury said the party seeks to reshape its political message to re-connect with voters in Tripura, starting with the upcoming village committee elections. Both immediate and long-term structural modifications are set to be addressed to bolster the party’s base, he added. For the second consecutive time since 2021, CPM did not win any seats in the ADC, an area that used to be a bastion for communists. Prior to 2018, CPM consistently triumphed in all 20 assembly seats within tribal regions for last four decades. However, this trend shifted dramatically with BJP’s substantial victories, indicating a notable disconnect between the party and the sentiments of the tribal population in Tripura. In the Dharmanagar assembly bypoll, BJP candidate triumphed over the CPM candidate by a staggering margin, threefold. The leadership has developed a strategic plan for the future. Chaudhury pointed out the necessity for the party to revitalize its political message. Traditional slogans may no longer appeal to the younger audience or align with the evolving socio-economic environment of the state. To connect better with everyday citizens, the party examined the reasons for their recent poor showing. Chaudhury underlined the decision to put in place long-term organizational strategies, while also enhancing local units and improving coordination throughout campaign periods. The village committee elections in ADC are seen by CPM as a crucial test for their future in rural Tripura, prompting the assignment of strategists to develop plans that ensure organizational preparedness at the booth level.“Enhancing our results in the upcoming electoral cycle is essential for the party’s continued relevance, not merely an aim,” Chaudhury remarked, adding that the results of this two-day session will shape the CPM’s direction in Tripura in the days to come, because people of Tripura are slowly beginning to recognize the threat posed by BJP and that soon, CPM is poised to become a viable alternative.
