GORAKHPUR: Aurangabad village in Bhathat area of Gorakhpur district, known for its traditional terracotta craft, is set to be developed as a major rural tourism destination under a state govt initiative.According to officials, the tourism department has prepared a project worth nearly Rs1 crore to transform the village into a ‘Special Tourist Village.’ The execution has been entrusted to the Construction and Design Services (C&DS). Of the sanctioned Rs96.29 lakh, the first instalment of Rs67 lakh has already been released.The project will include development of a gate complex, electrical infrastructures and installation of signage to improve the overall visitor experience.Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen the global branding of Gorakhpur’s terracotta craft, which has already gained recognition under the One District One Product scheme promoted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The scheme has played a key role in boosting the visibility and marketing of terracotta products in recent years.The government now plans to integrate this traditional craft with tourism by developing Aurangabad—considered the hub of the region’s terracotta art—into a model tourist village. Visitors will be able to watch artisans at work and purchase authentic handmade products directly from them.Tourism department deputy director Rajendra Prasad Yadav said the project is expected to be completed soon and will open new opportunities for homestays while generating employment for the locals.
