Gurgaon: Several parts of the city witnessed rain, thunderstorms and spells of hail on Tuesday afternoon as the minimum temperature plunged 7 degrees below normal, bringing an unseasonal chill for early May. In Gurgaon, the minimum temperature was recorded at 18°C at an IMD station in Sohna. On Monday, a minimum of 17.9°C at Gurgaon (AWS), 20.5°C at Gurgaon KVK and 19.9°C was recorded at NorthCap University station.IMD said minimum temperatures across Haryana remained significantly below normal despite a slight uptick from the previous day. The state saw an average rise of 1.4°C, but most places continued to record readings 3-4 degrees below normal.Day temperatures, too, remained subdued. Gurgaon recorded a maximum of 31.1°C at the AWS station. On Monday, the day temperature was recorded at 29.3°C at the KVK station and 31.5°C at NorthCap University.Across Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was 35.5°C in Rohtak, with most places staying 5 to 6 degrees below normal despite a slight day-on-day rise of around 1.9°C.Across the state, Rohtak also recorded the lowest minimum at 17.6°C, followed by Hisar (19.6°C) and Narnaul (19°C). Ambala and Karnal also remained below seasonal averages.While rainfall was negligible through the morning, conditions shifted by late afternoon, with showers reported around 4 pm in several parts of Gurgaon.Independent weather observer Navdeep Dahiya said, “Heat-induced thunderstorms were developing over Delhi-NCR, with 20-40% areas likely to receive brief spells of moderate to heavy rain along with pea-sized hail,” adding that the activity would remain localised and patchy.IMD’s latest forecast said, “Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places in Haryana on May 6, 10 and 11, along with thunderstorm and lightning accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated locations on May 6. Similar activity with stronger winds (40-50 kmph) is expected around May 10 and 11.”The department also said maximum temperatures are likely to rise by 4 to 6°C over the next five days, even as intermittent weather activity continues.The cooler conditions follow recent cloud cover and intermittent rain, which have kept temperatures suppressed across the region.
