Harish Rao demands immediate shifting of Maheshwaram medical college

Hyderabad: BRS leader and former minister T Harish Rao on Wednesday demanded that the govt immediately relocate the Maheshwaram govt medical college to a fully equipped govt or rented building near Vanasthalipuram or LB Nagar TIMS, citing alleged appalling conditions on the campus. He demanded that the Ranga Reddy district collector and Director of Medical Education (DME) meet the students personally and give them written assurances on the relocation.Participating in a dharna with the students and former minister Sabita Indra Reddy at the medical college, Harish Rao alleged that conditions on the medical college campus were “worse than those in a cattle shed” and claimed that the govt had failed to clear electricity, water and rent bills for the past 26 months.“The govt claims that it wants to compete with US and China. But looking at the current situation, it looks as if it is competing with Nepal and Sri Lanka. The Revanth Reddy govt has ₹1 lakh crore for the Musi project and Future City, but no money to clear pending bills,” the BRS deputy floor leader said.He said the principal of the govt medical college wrote multiple letters flagging issues like garbage accumulation, scrap material and the menace of dogs, monkeys and snakes on the college campus, but no action has been taken. Students from Telangana and from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Kerala opted for this college because of its proximity to Hyderabad. “Had they known what awaiting them here, not one of them would have chosen this college,” Harish Rao said. The former minister spoke to district collector Narayana Reddy and DME Vani Devi from the college on the phone and reiterated his demand for immediate shifting of the college to a facility near LB Nagar TIMS.Even a small private school is asked for fire safety, NOC and OC before it opens. The chief minister and health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha must answer how a govt medical college has been run without a single clearance, Harish Rao said.He said students had already protested in Jan and twice since. They have submitted representations to the collector, to the principal and to the DME. Their parents met the health minister in person. Despite repeated appeals, ministers and officials had failed to address their concerns, he alleged.
