Rohtak: BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Sunday accused the Congress and Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi of trying to undermine democratic institutions and create unrest by questioning the electoral process. He alleged that the opposition was acting under foreign influence to weaken India’s democratic system.Addressing a gathering at the culmination of the NDA’s 1-km ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ foot march in Rohtak, Nabin said the Congress should focus on strengthening democracy within its own organisation rather than questioning constitutional institutions. He alleged that the party’s decision-making remained confined to one family and said a party that lacked internal democracy had no moral authority to question an elected government. The BJP chief’s remarks came as the Congress-led INDIA bloc held a rally in Delhi against the Chief Election Commissioner. The NDA foot march was part of the BJP’s efforts to mobilise support in Rohtak, a traditional Congress stronghold.Greeting people on Haryana’s Foundation Day, Nabin said the march’s public participation reflected people’s commitment to democracy. He accused the Congress of questioning electoral institutions because it could not accept defeat, asking why the party had not raised similar concerns when it won elections in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka.Referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, Nabin said the Congress had failed to take responsibility for the killings following former PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination. He also referred to a controversial remark attributed to former PM Rajiv Gandhi, saying the party owed an explanation to Sikh families.Defending the electoral process and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, Nabin rejected Opposition allegations of vote theft. He said voter deletions should be viewed in the context of deaths, migration and the removal of illegal immigrants.Meanwhile, RLD president and union minister Jayant Chaudhary said the footmarch aimed to protect democracy and the people’s mandate. “We will not allow anyone to abuse or insult the mandate given by the people,” he said.Highlighting Haryana’s contribution to agriculture, sports, the armed forces and the freedom movement, Chaudhary said the state had made significant progress. He recalled the contributions of farmer leader Chhotu Ram and former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh, stressing that farmers’ interests must remain central to development.Former Union minister Smriti Irani, Haryana BJP in-charge, and other party leaders attended the event. The roadshow passed through main busy area of Rohtak, with the main gathering near D-Park, about 100 metres from former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s residence. Police had made elaborate security arrangements outside former CM Hooda’s residence and blocked the entry by installing iron gates to avoid any untoward situation while passing of the foot march from there. The procession disrupted traffic at several points, affecting movement towards the main market and PGIMS medical college, with commuters facing delays.
