JU students to march down to Aurobindo Bhavan to ensure action

Kolkata: The sexual harassment complaint reported by a first-year student against a staffer at JU has raised concerns among students. Many believe that the long-drawn inquiry, lack of timely implementation of punitive measures, and absence of sensitisation on gender issues are contributing to the problem. Students have also demanded immediate implementation of Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment to ensure safety of women.JU VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said the plaint will be forwarded to ICC for probe and, based on prima facie evidence, the accused will be barred from entering campus till the probe is completed.Students will march to Aurobindo Bhavan on Monday to ensure that the authority comes out with the debarment notice and the complaint is forwarded to ICC. The survivor’s batchmate Arghyajit Banerjee said, “What took place within the campus on Friday is an extremely heinous crime. Many such incidents have taken place, and many complaints have been registered in ICC, yet no steps have been taken. The probe needs to be fast-tracked and punishments need to be implemented.”An official said, “There are many cases where the ICC has completed a probe and submitted their recommendations but the university has not been able to implement punishments as the EC meeting is not being held.”PG student Anushna Das said, “There needs to be regular workshops on gender sensitisation among students, teachers and staffers.”
