Kolkata: After a gap of five years, CPM and Congress will re-enter the assembly, with BJP taking the treasury benches and Trinamool in opposition.CPM, with a vote share of 4.45%, won Murshidabad’s Domkal. Congress, with a 3% vote share, won two seats — Farakka and Raninagar, both in Murshidabad. In 2026, CPM and Congress contested separately, with CPM getting 2.8 lakh votes and Congress getting 1.8 lakh. CPM’s alliance partner, ISF, won Bhangar. After the announcement of results, CPM state secretary Md Salim admitted: “Despite our sincere efforts, the failure to reach an understanding with Congress allowed BJP to capture the space of the alternative to TMC.” He added: “After a long time, there will be Leftist MLAs in the assembly this time. CPM is committed to the goal of continuing movements in the interest of the people both inside and outside the assembly.“With their wins in minority-dominated Murshidabad, CPM and Congress also hit Trinamool’s clout in these parts. In 2021, TMC had 20 out of 22 seats in this district. This time, TMC won just nine seats in Murshidabad. With Congress’s most prominent Murshidabad face, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, losing from Behrampore, the party’s state president Subhankar Sarkar on Monday said: “I accept the mandate of the people. I hope that this is a good beginning for the journey into the future,” he said. However, he added: “Thousands of genuine voters could not vote this time. The large turnout was a result of people’s fear.” He asserted that the changed political scenario will now help Congress emerge as “the only alternative” to BJP across the state.Former TMC neta and AJUP chief Humayun Kabir emerged as a significant player in Murshidabad. Kabir clinched two seats, Rejinagar and Nowda, contesting from both constituencies himself. In Rejinagar, AJUP got 1.2 lakh votes. BJP got 64,660 while TMC got 41,718 votes. In Nowda, Kabir garnered 86,463 votes. BJP was placed second, with 58,520 votes, while TMC was next with 51,867 votes.Kabir said: “I had predicted a TMC rout before the elections. They looted people by handing out small amounts in doles. They took Muslim votes for granted. Today, they have been taught a lesson by Muslims.”
