Kolkata: The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) is likely to publish the results of the written examination for Group-C (clerk) and Group-D non-teaching staff recruitment in the state-run schools ahead of Kali Puja (Nov 8). Sources said last-minute preparations were underway. The written test for both the categories was held by the commission in March this year to fill 8,477 vacant non-teaching staff positions across the state schools. Among these, 2,989 vacancies are for Group-C, while 5,488 positions have been designated for Group-D positions. More than 16 lakh candidates took the written tests for these two categories. According to the published vacancy list, the majority of the Group-D posts are for Bengali-medium schools. Among them, 4,287 are in the general category, and 1,021 seats are reserved for women. Additionally, 141 Group-D vacancies are for Hindi-medium and 21 for Urdu-medium schools. Following a Supreme Court order in 2023, the entire 2016 recruitment panel—comprising 25,753 appointments for assistant teachers for classes IX–XII, clerks, and Group-D staffers—was cancelled due to widespread corruption, rank-jumping, and tampering and destruction of OMR sheets. This made it difficult to distinguish between candidates who received jobs ‘dishonestly’ and those who were ‘untainted.’ Fresh appointments for classes IX–XII assistant teachers are currently underway, while staffers who lost their jobs have been waiting eagerly without salaries for over a year.
