NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia will resume offline classes from November 10, with the university also deciding to conduct its second mid-term examinations in offline mode from November 16 to 21.News agency ANI reported, online classes will continue until November 9, according to an order issued by registrar Prof Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi. The university said all other academic activities for students would also be conducted offline, in accordance with the notified academic calendar for the 2026-27 academic session. The decision marks a shift from the university’s earlier arrangement to continue online classes amid tensions on campus over the demand for the restoration of the elected students’ union, which has remained defunct since 2006.
Jamia accepts protesters’ demands, sets May 2027 deadline for union constitution
The latest academic decision comes after the university agreed to three key demands raised by protesting students during their 18-day agitation.Jamia has set May 15, 2027, as the deadline for approving and implementing the students’ union constitution and decided to hold elections within six weeks of the commencement of the next academic session. The administration also agreed to revoke disciplinary action taken against students during the protest. Following the announcement, protesters said they would call off their hunger strike and agitation. The decision came after students questioned an earlier university order stating that elections would be held within 15 days of the approval of the union constitution, without specifying when the constitution itself would be approved.
Protests escalated after talks with administration
The agitation had earlier triggered tensions on campus, with the university shifting classes online from October 24 and shutting libraries and canteens. Some hostellers had also alleged that they were asked to vacate their rooms. The situation escalated on the night of October 27, when the university administration alleged that groups of protesting students, accompanied by locals, vandalised campus gates and walls, brought down Gate No. 4C, pelted stones and damaged CCTV infrastructure. The administration also alleged that masked protesters reached the boys’ hostels and that women faculty members and hostel officials were threatened. The unrest had drawn political attention, with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expected to visit the campus on October 28.(With inputs from ANI)
