Lingusamy recalls the trouble with ‘Sandakozhi 2’, cites ‘Dhurandhar’, ‘Baahubali’, ‘KGF’ and ‘Jailer’ to explain why sequels need to be made at the right time

Making sequels has become common in Indian cinema, with filmmakers hoping to recreate the success of their hit films. However, not every sequel manages to win over audiences. Tamil director Lingusamy, whose ‘Sandakozhi 2’ failed to replicate the success of the original, has now opened up about the challenges of making sequels. He believes timing plays a crucial role in determining whether a sequel works.Speaking in an interview with Behindwoods, Lingusamy reflected on his experience of directing ‘Sandakozhi 2’. He admitted that the film taught him a lesson about the risks of revisiting a successful story after a long gap.“I have already got into trouble by making a sequel, haven’t I? It was ‘Sandakozhi 2’,” he said.Explaining the challenges involved, the director added, “There is a problem with sequels. If you are going to make one, you should make it immediately. If there is a long gap, everything about it changes.”According to Lingusamy, making a sequel soon after the original can help retain its energy and audience connection. A long delay, on the other hand, can change the way audiences relate to the characters and story.

‘Baahubali’, ‘KGF’ and ‘Jailer 2’ cited while discussing successful sequels

Lingusamy also referred to films that have successfully continued their stories through subsequent instalments. He mentioned ‘Dhurandhar’, ‘Baahubali’, ‘KGF’ and Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ while discussing films that have performed well with audiences.“Sequels made immediately can turn out well. ‘Dhurandhar’, ‘Baahubali’, ‘KGF’, and now ‘Jailer’ have done well. There is nothing wrong with making a sequel,” he said. His comments come amid the growing popularity of film franchises, with filmmakers increasingly returning to established characters and stories to attract audiences. However, Lingusamy believes that the timing of a sequel can make a significant difference to its reception.

Lingusamy reveals a star suggested ‘Run 2’

The director also revealed that a leading actor recently suggested making a sequel to his hit film ‘Run’. Recalling their conversation, Lingusamy said he had met the actor and was discussing his plans for his next film when the suggestion came up.“Recently, I met a big hero. When I told him that I was going to make a film, he immediately asked me to make ‘Run 2’,” he recalled. However, Lingusamy remains cautious about revisiting the film after such a long gap. He believes that recreating the magic of an earlier success is not always easy.“But that is a big risk. We create magic once, but when we return after a gap, it may not work,” he explained.
