Chandigarh: With civic polls approaching in seven urban bodies, Mahila Congress leaders on Sunday attacked the BJP over women’s representation in local elections.Mahila Congress national president Alka Lamba and Haryana unit chief Pearl Chaudhary raised the issue while addressing the media after Chaudhary formally took charge.Lamba claimed the Congress had fielded women candidates in five of the seven top posts in the civic polls and ensured representation across categories. “Has BJP taken care of its own stand in giving representation to women?” she asked.She also hit out at the BJP over its remarks on Congress being anti-women, saying it was the Congress that brought and passed key legislation for women. “Now, in a bid to strengthen its numbers, the government is misrepresenting the bill and running a misleading campaign,” she said.Lamba further criticised the Centre’s foreign policy, linking it to rising oil and gas prices.Chaudhary said Mahila Congress workers would work to ensure a strong performance in the civic polls. “Our priority is the civic elections. Going forward, we aim to have at least one Mahila Congress worker for every 20 voters at the booth level,” she said, adding that the focus would be on strengthening the organisation and increasing women’s participation.Senior Congress leaders, including Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Deepender Singh Hooda, Rao Narender Singh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, were present at the event.
