HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ television adaptation is shaping up to be one of the most expensive productions in the network’s history, with an estimated budget of approximately USD 201 million (around GBP 150 million).According to a report by Deadline, the fantasy series is on course to rank alongside the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Last of Us’ in terms of production expenditure. The reported figure comes from newly filed financial accounts in the UK, giving an early indication of the scale of HBO’s investment in bringing JK Rowling’s bestselling books to television, beginning with ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’.As per reports on Deadline, the first season, which is scheduled to premiere during the Christmas week, now ranks among the network’s most expensive productions of all time.
UK financial filings offer a glimpse into production costs
The figures come from Plum Jam Productions, the UK-based special purpose company through which the ‘Harry Potter’ series is being produced. The company recently filed its 2025 accounts with Companies House, revealing a substantial increase in revenue as production on the first season got underway.According to the filings, the production house reported a revenue of GBP 130.6 million (approximately USD 175 million) in 2025, compared with GBP 18.4 million (around USD 24.6 million) in 2024.Taken together, the figures suggest that approximately GBP 150 million (around USD 201 million) may have been spent on establishing the production.Assuming the first season consists of eight episodes, the estimated expenditure would put the film on an estimated budget of approximately GBP 18.8 million (around USD 25.2 million) per episode. This calculation, however, does not establish the final cost of each instalment.Nonetheless, the reported figure would put the series above the widely reported production cost of the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’, which was estimated at around USD 15 million per episode.
HBO already plans to continue with ‘Chamber of Secrets’
HBO has a long-term commitment to the franchise. The network has already renewed the series for a second season, which will adapt ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, the second book in Rowling’s series.
A new cast takes on the wizarding world
The upcoming series features a new generation of actors in the iconic roles of Harry Potter played by Dominic McLaughlin, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, while Mark Mylod is directing multiple episodes. The creative team is tasked with reimagining the wizarding world for television, with the longer format expected to allow for a more detailed adaptation of Rowling’s books.Unlike the original film franchise, which condensed the seven novels into eight feature films, the television series is intended to devote an entire season to each book.
