Gujarat proposes three-tier AI training for 5 lakh students

Gandhinagar: The state education department has prepared a draft policy proposing a three-tier artificial intelligence (AI) training programme for five lakh students across higher education institutions, ranging from basic AI literacy to discipline-specific applications and advanced, employment-oriented skills. The Gujarat AI for Every Student Mission 2026-27 aims to rapidly scale AI education across Gujarat. According to the draft policy from the higher education department, the initiative will train 5,000 faculty members as AI Master Trainers within 12 months, backed by a state allocation of Rs 20 crore. “The draft of the Gujarat AI for Every Student Mission 2026-27 has been prepared and will be implemented as soon as it receives in-principle administrative and financial clearances,” a source close to the development said. The policy outlines three progressive levels: an eight-hour foundation course targeting five lakh students, a 25-hour applied AI course covering one lakh learners, and a 50-hour advanced programme for 20,000 students. “The latter two groups will be drawn from students completing the preceding level or demonstrating equivalent competency,” a source said. The first level, “AI Foundation for Every Student”, will introduce learners to AI and its applications, generative AI tools, prompting fundamentals, and the use of AI for learning and productivity. “This course is proposed to be delivered online, primarily leveraging free AI learning resources,” said an official. The second level, “AI for Domain Applications”, will focus on applying AI to students’ respective disciplines. “Eight streams are proposed, including commerce, management and finance, engineering and technology, arts and humanities, science and mathematics, education and teacher training, agriculture and allied sciences, healthcare and life sciences and law, public administration and other disciplines,” said a source. The third level, “Advanced AI Skills and Employability”, will offer 50 hours of project-based blended training. The curriculum will include advanced AI concepts and tools, specialisation-specific skills, applied workflows and data administration, industry case studies and labs, capstone development, and final assessment.“The learning modules will be bilingual with both English and Gujarati support. A key safeguard in the course will be verification of AI-produced outputs rather than accepting them at face value. The curriculum is intended to promote responsible use, secure student and institutional data and incorporate safeguards suited to different disciplines,” said an official associated with the project.A State Mission Unit will coordinate implementation, with universities nominating nodal officers and colleges appointing coordinators. “A statewide dashboard will track enrolment, certification and progression through unique learner IDs, along with institutional review and independent verification of selected outcomes,” an official said.
