Ghaziabad: A woman and her daughter-in-law were electrocuted, while her 18-year-old daughter suffered injuries after they came into contact with a snapped power cable in a field at Raj Nagar Extension in Ghaziabad Tuesday morning.Satyawati (50) and Ruby (20) died on the spot, while Devshree is undergoing treatment, police said.ACP (Nandgram) Ziauddin Ahmad said the incident took place around 6am near 22 CG Stadium opposite Migsun society. The three women, residents of Khiriya Bakharpur in Badaun, were working in the field when the incident happened.Family members rushed the women to a hospital, where Satyawati and Ruby were declared brought dead.“Police received information about the incident around 8.15am. The condition of the 18-year-old girl is stable. They were living in a slum in front of Migsun society,” ACP Ziauddin said.Munish Singh, Satyawati’s nephew, told TOI that Satyawati and her husband Than Singh took the land on lease to grow vegetables and sell them in the wholesale market. Three years ago, Singh rented three acres in Raj Nagar Extension, where the family has been farming and living in a makeshift hut. Ruby married Satyawati’s son Shivam four months ago.“Around 5.30am, Satyawati, her daughter Devshri and daughter-in-law Ruby had gone to pull out radishes from the field. The radishes were to be taken to the market that morning. At the time, Singh was at home, while Shivam had gone to Badaun to attend a wedding,” he said. The ACP said the initial investigation found that the victims’ field lies around three feet below the road level. Construction activity, including building and road work, is underway in the area, with earthmovers being used extensively. Some locals told police an earthmover hit an electric pole on Monday night, causing one wire to snap and fall on the road. Later, a short circuit caused another cable to snap and fall into the field. Police said the victims’ family has not yet filed a complaint, but an FIR will be registered soon.Akash Rastogi, a junior engineer in the power department, said a complaint has been submitted at Nandgram police station against the contractor engaged by Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA).Rastogi said road construction work was being carried out late Monday night on Raj Nagar Extension Road by GDA contractor Ankit Goyal. A cable supplying power for residential use and a tubewell passes over the same road.“When the dumper trolley was lifted to unload material onto the road, the wires came in touch with each other after being hit by it, broke and fell into the field. The women later came in contact with the snapped cables and died of shock,” the junior engineer said.“We received the information about electrocution around 8am. If the contractor had informed the power house concerned before starting construction work, the cable could have been deactivated to prevent the accident,” he added.
