Ahmedabad: A 49-year-old engineering workshop owner from Vastral lost Rs 6.8 lakh to cyberfraudsters who threatened to disconnect his piped gas connection over an alleged unpaid bill and tricked him into downloading a malicious mobile application. He received a WhatsApp message on Oct 9 from an unknown number warning that his gas connection would be disconnected due to a pending bill. When the victim said he had already paid the bill, the caller claimed there was a difference of Rs 10 that needed to be paid and sent two APK files via WhatsApp. Soon afterwards, his phone started hanging repeatedly. After restarting the device, he received alerts from his bank informing him that money had been debited from his account.
