Pune: A 21-year-old man with a criminal record allegedly fired at his 47-year-old cousin in an attempt to kill him following a family dispute in Lashirgaon village, along the Velhe-Nasrapur Road, about 40km from Pune, on Wednesday.Velhe police arrested the accused, Omkar Jadhav, on Thursday. Jadhav had an extortion case registered against him with the Velhe police as well.Assistant police inspector Kishor Shevate of Velhe police said the the bullet lodged near the victim Vijay Vasave’s backbone. “It was surgically removed at Sassoon General Hospital in Pune on Thursday. We traced the accused with the help of CCTV footage and a tip-off. We are yet to recover the firearm from him.”The officer said Vasave, a resident of Malavali village in Rajgad taluka, and Jadhav are cousins. They had a dispute over a trivial issue. On Oct 5, Jadhav allegedly abused the complainant’s nephew and sister-in-law over a phone call. “The complainant and his two relatives then went to Jadhav’s house in Pune and informed his parents about the incident. At that time, Jadhav’s father and the complainant slapped Jadhav.”Shevate said Jadhav held a grudge after being confronted over the earlier dispute. “On Wednesday afternoon, he called the complainant’s brother and said he would not escalate the matter if Vasave came to Pune and apologised. However, around 6.30pm, while Vasave was returning home on his motorcycle, he heard a loud sound resembling a firecracker and felt a sharp pain in his back. Initially, he thought the motorcycle’s tyre had burst. After checking and finding the tyre intact, he noticed Jadhav driving away. A villager then alerted him to the injury on his back.”Vasave was taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Sassoon General Hospital in Pune. “He is out of danger,” Shevate said.
