GU polls: Court prevents general secy-elect from taking charge
Madhurjya Plaban Talukdar

Guwahati: A Kamrup (Metro) civil court has restrained Gauhati University’s newly declared general secretary Madhurjya Plaban Talukdar from assuming office following a legal challenge by his rival candidate Nayan Akash Bora, whose nomination was cancelled during scrutiny in the recently concluded GU-PGSU election.ABVP’s Talukdar was declared elected unopposed after the nomination of Aasu-backed Bora was cancelled, triggering protests. The court’s order came while Bora’s third appeal against the cancellation was pending before the appellate authority of the university. Despite the pending appeal, Grievances Redressal Cell of the university’s election committee held a hearing on Oct 3 and rejected Bora’s nomination for the post of general secretary again later that day.Bora contended before the court that the decision was arbitrary, biased and contrary to the applicable election rules and Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations.Senior officials of GU had earlier said in a media conference that records showed Bora was simultaneously pursuing two postgraduate programmes, making the issue a substantive eligibility matter rather than an arbitrary decision targeting an individual. In its order issued on Wednesday, the court restrained the concerned parties, until further orders, from giving effect to, acting upon, or implementing the Oct 3 notification concerning Bora’s candidature for the post of general secretary of Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) for 2026-27.The court further restrained the concerned parties from permitting the opposite party or any other person to assume, hold, discharge functions of, continue in, or act as holder of the said office until the next date fixed by the court. The order, however, clarified that the ad interim relief would not affect the election results, their declaration or implementation, or the functioning of office-bearers elected to posts other than that of general secretary.
