Mother’s name off voter list no ground to stall son’s police verification: HC

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday came to the rescue of 22-year-old Abdul Hamid Sk, whose police verification was kept pending after he qualified for a constable job in the Bengal police, because his mother’s name was deleted from the voter list following the Special Intensive Revision of Bengal’s voter roll. The HC directed the inspector general of police or any appropriate authority to finish Abdul’s police verification within 48 hours.Calcutta HC Justice Krishna Rao said “there was no reason for the authority” to withhold Abdul’s verification because his mother’s name was deleted from the voter list, especially since Abdul’s own name did feature on the list.“The name of the petitioner has appeared on the voter list. He has cast his vote. He was selected for the constable post. There is no reason for the authority (to keep his verification pending) on the ground that his mother’s name was deleted from the voter list,” Justice Rao observed.Counsel for the Election Commission submitted in court that Abdul falls in the category of those born after July 1, 1987, making verification of both parents mandatory under the Citizenship Act.A resident of Murshidabad’s Nabagram, Abdul passed the recruitment test, including written and interview, for the constable post conducted by the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board with a score of 63.9 out of 100.His mother Atar Ban Bibi, whose name was deleted from the voter list, has appealed her removal before the tribunal deciding on deletions.
