Guwahati: Akhil Gogoi called off his over 300-hour sit-in at the Assam assembly after the govt accepted key demands on flood relief. The Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA ended the ‘Satyagraha’ on Thursday after cabinet ministers Keshab Mahanta and Pijush Hazarika conveyed the govt’s decisions. These include interim assistance of Rs 15,000 each to 3,068 flood-hit families in Sivasagar assembly constituency and a high-level inquiry into the July floods in upper Assam. The govt will also invite fresh claims from eligible families left out of the existing list of about 57,000 beneficiaries from Sivasagar and neighbouring districts.Mahanta and Hazarika were deputed by the chief minister to discuss the matter with Gogoi.“The govt has agreed to provide interim financial assistance of Rs 15,000 each to 3,068 affected families, involving a total outlay of over Rs 4.60 crore. The CM has given consent to it,” Mahanta said.Although Gogoi and Raijor Dal had sought a CBI probe, Mahanta said the chief minister agreed to order a “high-level inquiry”, which would be announced shortly. The govt will invite claims and objections and conduct a fresh survey if eligible families were left out of the earlier beneficiary list, Mahanta said.Gogoi began the sit-in on Oct 2, demanding compensation for flood victims in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. His demands included Rs 15,000 for every affected family, an additional Rs 10,000 for families in Sivasagar and Charaideo, and compensation of up to Rs 10 lakh for the worst-hit households and businesses. Raijor Dal estimates that about two lakh families were affected by the July 19 floods.
