Chennai: A sessions court in Chennai has sentenced a 32-year-old man to imprisonment for life, after finding him guilty of murdering his 70-year-old grandmother. He had hit her with a hammer and slashed her with a shaving blade because she demanded he return her 5 sovereigns of gold jewellery that was pledged by his mother. On Nov 20, 2022, R Satheesh, of Red Hills visited his grandmother, Visalatchi, who was living alone in Korukkupet and working as a maid in Tondiyarpet. After she fed him his favourite lunch, fish curry and rice, she insisted he return her jewels pledged by his mother. Angered, he bolted the door of the house, attacked her and watched TV while she bled to death.Additional sessions judge N S Srivasthsan observed that the accused, having taken undue advantage the deceased’s isolation, committed the murder in a cruel and unusual manner. “It may be true that the deceased might have abused the wife of the accused before the occurrence, but it will not justify the act of attacking the deceased with hammer and blade in a cruel manner,” the court said. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a 2,500 penalty. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently, and the period of detention already undergone shall be set off against the term of imprisonment imposed on him, the judge added.
