7 held for running fake call centre from Delhi

Panchkula: Police claimed to have busted a well-organised inter-state cyber fraud racket being operated through a fake call centre in Delhi with the arrest of seven individuals.Police said the gang allegedly duped people by posing as officials of insurance companies and collecting money on the pretext of policy maturity dues and taxes.Four of the accused — Amandeep Singh alias Aman, Gurdeep Singh, Ashichandra Gupta and Tanzeer Ansari — were arrested during a raid in Delhi on April 27. Three others — Ejaz Haider, Kartavyapuri and Suraj — were brought on production warrants from Sunaria Jail in Rohtak, where they were lodged in another case. Police said the accused used fake SIM cards, rented bank accounts and a call centre set-up to execute the fraud. They would call victims, impersonate insurance officials and gain trust by sharing accurate policy details. Later, they would ask victims to deposit money as a “final instalment” and “tax” to release the maturity amount. The case came to light after a Kalka resident was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.9 lakh. The victim first transferred Rs 98,000 as the final instalment and later Rs 99,500 as tax into different bank accounts. He realised he had been duped when he contacted the company’s office in Chandigarh. An FIR was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station on April 9.During interrogation, police seized nine mobile phones, 10 cheque books and 10 ATM cards from the accused. Further investigation revealed that the three persons lodged in jail were actively involved in the racket.Police said the four accused arrested from Delhi have been remanded in judicial custody, while the other three have been sent back to Sunaria Jail.Police have warned residents against sharing personal or financial details on unknown calls or messages and to verify information before making any transactions.
