Gurgaon: The traffic monitoring is set to expand with 1,000 more CCTV cameras and speed radars across the city. These CCTV cameras and radars will come up at 70 junctions across nine key road corridors, including Manesar, Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road and Palam Vihar. The expansion comes alongside GMDA’s ongoing installation of 2,722 cameras at 258 locations under its own phase-II project. This is the second phase of strengthening traffic management and road safety in the city in collaboration between GMDA, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) and Gurgaon police under a CSR initiative. The first phase of the partnership has seen 365 CCTV cameras and 29 speed radars installed at 23 junctions along four key roads, including Southern Peripheral Road, Golf Course Extension Road, the stretch between Cyber City and Golf Course Road, MG Road and Old Delhi Road. The additional cameras — at 70 junctions — will cover around 65km of roads, with the network to be integrated with GMDA’s integrated command and control centre (ICCC) for real-time monitoring and traffic enforcement. On Wednesday, GMDA signed the MoU with the company. The system is expected to help detect violations such as riding without helmets, triple riding, jumping red lights, over-speeding and wrong-side driving. The authorities aim to use technology-enabled enforcement to improve road discipline and road safety. GMDA CEO P C Meena said, “GMDA has committed itself to building a robust, technology-driven monitoring network to strengthen traffic management and road safety across the city. The expanded CCTV coverage will strengthen enforcement of traffic rules and promote greater road discipline.”Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s senior executive officer (corporate affairs) Rahul Bharti said the system would help identify traffic violations. “This system addresses issues like riding without helmets, triple riding, red-light violations, over-speeding and wrong-side driving. These violations highlight a critical road-safety challenge, as human error continues to be the leading cause of road accidents in India. The findings reinforce the need for sustained, collaborative efforts to improve compliance with traffic regulations and foster safe road behaviour. Technology alone would not be enough to improve road safety. Responsible driving, effective enforcement and robust driving licence testing were also necessary,” he said. The existing network comprises 285 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, 39 red-light violation detection (RLVD) cameras, 24 general surveillance cameras and 17 pan-tilt-zoom cameras. Separately, GMDA is installing 2,722 additional cameras across the city, Manesar and adjoining areas. The installations include 1,406 ANPR cameras, 102 RLVD cameras, 74 pan-tilt-zoom cameras, 759 general monitoring cameras, 347 face-recognition cameras and 20 speed radars. Under Phase I of GMDA, the authority has already installed 1,200 cameras. Meena has directed officials to expedite the ongoing work and ensure that the expanded network is integrated effectively with the ICCC.
