Guwahati: A Thailand-inspired pandal blending Hindu and Buddhist architecture is drawing attention in Guwahati’s Pandu area this Durga Puja. The Rest Camp Kalibari Durga Puja committee has built the pandal using fibre, in line with govt directives against the use of thermocol and plastic. Its temple-inspired design features a decorated multi-level façade, detailed figures and a large central entrance.“When it comes to puja, everyone is included. We welcome all participants of different religions, and this is a gathering that brings people together,” said Amal Chowdhury, president of the puja committee. The pandal stands over 60 feet tall and has been built at a cost of more than Rs 60 lakh. It will be inaugurated on the fifth day of the festival in the evening.“The pandal is being designed by an artist from Dum Dum in Kolkata named Ratan Pal, while the idol is being made by Kashinath Pal from Chinsurah, Kolkata,” Chowdhury added. The committee has been bringing artists from Kolkata to create the pandal and idol for the past 30 to 35 years. The puja will also feature recitations, dance, singing and musical performances in the evenings. The committee estimates that 80,000 to 90,000 people visit the pandal over three days, though the actual figure could be higher. Visitors begin arriving around 2 pm, and the pandal remains crowded until 4 pm or 4.30 pm. The committee expects footfall to cross one lakh in a single day this year.
