Chandigarh: The state election commission, Chandigarh, has adopted the electoral rolls of the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency for the forthcoming municipal corporation elections, according to a notification published in the Chandigarh administration gazette. The notification, issued by state election commissioner Vijay Dev on Oct 9 under the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (Preparation of Electoral Rolls) Rules, 1995, comes ahead of the expiry of the current MC house’s term on Jan 7, 2027.The commission said the parliamentary electoral rolls adequately cover all 35 municipal wards and can be used for the civic polls. The rolls were revised under the Special Intensive Revision exercise and were finally published by the chief electoral officer, Chandigarh, on Sept 22.Officials noted that preparing a separate set of electoral rolls for the municipal elections would require additional time and expenditure, which can be avoided by adopting the existing voter lists. The notification further clarified that any additions, deletions or corrections made to the parliamentary electoral rolls after Sept 22, and up to the last date for filing nominations, will also be reflected in the corresponding municipal ward rolls. The adopted electoral rolls will serve as the official voter lists for the upcoming municipal corporation elections, which must be conducted before the current house completes its term.
