Surat: A nine-month-old girl died after falling into an open drainage pit on the premises of a printing mill in Pandesara GIDC on Sunday morning.The deceased, Gauri alias Amruta, was the youngest of four children of Buddhvilas, a native of Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh who has been working in the mill’s boiler department for the past 10 years.According to her father, Gauri had woken up around 5am along with her siblings. While the other children were occupied watching a mobile phone, he assumed the infant was with them and resumed his work.He later realised that Gauri was missing, following which, the family launched a search. After looking for around 10 to 15 minutes, they found the infant inside a nearby drainage pit.The child had apparently crawled towards the drain while playing and fallen through an opening in its partially covered surface. Although the family immediately pulled her out, she could not be saved.The girl’s family alleged that the uncovered drain posed a serious safety risk, particularly as workers and their families reside on the mill premises.Pandesara police have registered an accidental death case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
