Kolkata: Trinamool Baruipur East MLA Bibhas Sardar sustained injuries on Saturday after he was allegedly attacked twice within a distance of around 2 km while returning from a public outreach programme in his constituency on Saturday. He had to undergo a CT scan and returned home after receiving treatment at Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital. He lodged a complaint with Joynagar police station.According to the MLA, the first incident took place in the Mansatala area, where a group of miscreants armed with sticks allegedly dragged him out of his car and assaulted him. When the MLA’s security guard tried to rescue him, the attackers surrounded the guard, giving Sardar an opportunity to escape. He sustained injuries to his head and hands, says Sardar. In the second alleged attack, Sardar’s car was surrounded and vandalised. The MLA contacted Joynagar police station from the spot, following which cops rescued him.Police have started an investigation.Alleging that the assailants were associated with BJP, Sardar said, “They tried to kill me.”Following the attack, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee spoke to Sardar on the phone. Banerjee enquired about the MLA’s health and assured him of all necessary assistance. While BJP’s Joynagar organisational district president Utpal Naskar could not be contacted, local mandal president Sandeep Nair rejected the MLA’s allegations. Nair alleged that Sardar had visited Tilpi with his aides while an Awas Yojana survey was underway and made provocative remarks. “BJP workers sought an explanation from Sardar at Dhosa Haat but he sped away, leaving several injured. Sardar then faced public anger at Mansatala and Goalberia Haat,” Nair said, adding that the injured had been taken to Padmerhat block rural hospital.
