NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Sunday said it had informed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke about his grandmother’s death and offered assistance to facilitate his travel to his hometown for the last rites, but he declined the offer.The statement came after Dipke’s mother, Anita Dipke, accused the police of lying about informing her son and said the family had put the last rites on hold until he could return.“The information regarding the demise of Abhijeet’s grandmother was promptly conveyed to him with due sensitivity. He was also informed of the scheduled funeral time and offered all possible assistance to facilitate his travel to his hometown on humanitarian grounds, however he denied to avail the same,” Delhi Police said.
Dipke’s mother alleges family could not contact him
Anita Dipke on Sunday said the family had been unable to reach her son and questioned the police’s claim that he had been informed about the death.“We have not been able to contact him…Delhi Police is lying. If he got the news (his grandmother’s demise), he would have come immediately…we have put the last rites on hold for him…” she said.Dipke’s paternal grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, 85, died at her home in Santuk Pimpri village in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district at 11.30am on Saturday following a prolonged illness.She had been unwell for about a month and had previously been hospitalised in Hingoli, according to family sources cited by.Her last rites were scheduled for 10am on Sunday.
Dipke, CJP leaders released after preventive detention
Dipke, CJP co-convenor Saurav Das and party leader Ashutosh Ranka were detained by Delhi Police after arriving in the national capital from Mumbai for the party’s proposed ‘Jantar Mantar 2.0’ protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.An Executive Magistrate subsequently ordered their release following the preventive detention.The proposed demonstration sought Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest, citing public safety, traffic management and law-and-order concerns.(With agency inputs)
